Scatter and transmit (edited)

Description

EDIT: Per the comment thread below, G3M scatter/transmit should only be used in Studio 4.9, not 4.8. Once 4.9 goes final -- which, at the moment, looks like it will be before the end of 2015 -- I'll probably redo and replace this image so that the comparison is valid. As it stands, the SkinHip zone is done with the shader tuned for 4.8, and the rest of him for 4.9.

So, first thing I did when I got Beautiful Skin Iray G3M was convert the Scatter and Transmit Base option to a shader, then put it on G2M Idrissa with RawArt's Albane M4 texture, because that's just how I roll. (And yes, I could have done it with the G3F version, but it didn't occur to me at the time, for some reason.) I left the SkinHip section of the genitals untouched so I could see the difference, but cropped short of the genitals so I don't have to put this behind a mature filter.

The reason I did this is because Scatter and Transmit is supposed to work better with paler textures. Albane is nothing if not pale. It's a slightly unfair comparison -- the SkinHip section has been tinkered with somewhat whereas the rest of him is out-of-the-box default BSkin settings for Scatter and Transmit -- but only slightly.

It's an interesting result. To be sure, a lot of very pale/fair people tend to the florid, in part because the fairness of the skin makes it easier to see what's underneath. People with some degree of albinism may also have somewhat thinner skin, I think. And you can certainly see more detail in the texture.

That said, if I use this option on him going forward, I might pull down the strength of his translucency/transmission color. It seems to me he should really land somewhere between what you see on SkinHip, and what you see on the rest of him. To be sure, it does depend somewhat on the lighting, but this is just my standard three-spotlight setup, with pale blue and pale pink to either side, and a backdrop to make him stand out.

thanks for the info! I really like the slight mottling in this render. I tend to not care for skin sets that are smooth and blemish-less...very unrealistic. I'm going to toy around with translucency strength a bit more.
