Description

Another Iray proof of concept. Studio 4.8, Iray, no postwork except logos.

PRE-work on the other hand ...

So you know that thing I said in another image or journal entry or something about not doing a whole bunch of texture work on items for Iray, because they ought to work a little more easily than that?

Yeah, forget I said that.

Mind, the texture work in this one was relatively simple. The first couple images I tried with Darius looked fine -- he is quite literally one of the two dark-skinned characters that the Iray Uber base shader conversion worked on almost perfectly (the other being Monique). However, the problem I had was with his face. He's got such a heavy beard that it messes up Reality/Lux renders, but his skin was coming out absolutely smooth looking, which looked wrong. So I wound up making a custom bump map for his face. I'd already made a custom SSS mask for when I was fighting him and Reality/Lux, so I didn't need to do that.

Do I know how to make bump maps properly? No. No, I do not. Did I get incredibly lucky in how this turned out? Yes. Yes, I DID.

The trickiest bit, to the extent there was any, was making sure that I didn't overdo things so that his head looked like it belonged on a different body, or making sure that I didn't make the T-zone of his face bumpy when it wasn't before. I have absolutely no idea what I did, but somehow, it worked. His skin texture reads as not-too-smooth, and there's no dividing line between his chin and neck. I'll take it.

The DAZ Rose has their Iray red velvet fabric shader on the petals. Did not expect that shade of red, but otherwise, it's fine.

Oh, and it turns out that, as long as we're stuck having visible mesh lights for Iray, if you have Reality, those props are very useful. This is lit by the Reality curved mesh light, with the Iray emission shader applied. Scales easily, gives a constant light focused on an (eventual) central point, very helpful. The other mesh light props may be useful as well, although the3dwizard (I think) did a mesh light set. Oddly, none of those lights are just ordinary light planes, either straight or curved. They all do interesting patterns and shapes. Which is nice, but sometimes you just want a curved plane of light.

This came out looking really real! I admire your skill at making skin look right.
